Student Spotlight: Valfh Sefuiva

Valfh Sufuiva is a year 12 student at Marcellin College. Over the past 12 months, Valfh has participated in a huge range of sports including Rugby, Netball, Volleyball, Basketball, Kilikiti, Softball, and Waka Ama. She is known as someone who can liven up any room and will always put a smile on your face.

Valfh was nominated for our Student Spotlight feature by the Director of Sport at Marcellin College, Cameron Bitchener, who says “There is never a dull moment with Valfh in your team, and she is often making the team fall to the floor with laughter.

“She is a great servant to sport, offering to coach and referee above playing. Valfh is a great competitor who will always give 100% while she is on the field or court and is a great team player who puts her friends first and will always support them.

“She is always wanting to volunteer her service, not only to sport but all parts of Marcellin College. Valfh has great enthusiasm and charisma which I believe has given other students the confidence to give sport a go that wouldn’t have.”

What motivates you to play sport?

Mostly to stay fit and keep myself happy. Also to play with friends and getting the chance to play against local schools.

How have you been keeping active during lockdown?

During this lockdown period, I’ve been working out three days a week and if I’m feeling angry or stressed I would workout on those days too. I’ve also been taking one hour walks with my family around our local park.

What are you looking forward to as we move back down the alert levels?

When this is all over, I’m really excited to get back into training after school for all the sports I’ve signed up to this year because I miss laughing while I’m running around.

Who is your sporting role model and why?

I have many role models but if I had to pick one, it would have to be Ms Fiao’o Fa’amausili. She was captain of the winning Black Ferns back in 2017 and has also served the community of Auckland by being a police officer. She is an inspiration being on the front line of defense both on and off the field.
